Do you look forward to stepping into a cosy, warm home each night? You’re not the only one. Whilst most people assume pest infestations are likely throughout the summer, animals and insects actually seek shelter, warmth and food sources for survival during the winter months – and that makes your home the perfect target!
To show you why it is important to stay on top of your pest control all year through, we have listed some of the most common pests found in winter.
Pest: Rodents
Winter Objectives: Mice and rats are scavengers, which means they are always on the hunt for food. So particularly in winter when natural food sources are scarce, they like to enter homes in search for their next meal. Your house is also a great place to keep their growing family nice and warm.
Disruption: Rodents rapidly multiply, there are never only one, always male and female. Breeding rats can quickly turn into a cast of the nutcracker. They have an awful habit of gnawing through materials in the home, such as wires and cardboard. If electrical appliances and wires are damaged, they can potentially spark electrical fires in the home. Rodents also carry bacteria in their fur, which can contaminate your home and spread diseases to its inhabitants. And let’s not even get started on the annoyance of finding chewed up cereal boxes …
Pest: Cockroaches
Winter Objectives: Although these ugly looking creatures certainly look like they belong outside, they like to live in small, enclosed areas surrounded by plenty of food, moisture and warmth. Cockroaches also breed in the winter, meaning a small infestation can quickly become a big problem.
Disruption: Cockroaches contaminate food and surfaces as they move around the home. They are known for aggravating asthmatic symptoms, allergies and spreading bacteria, which can quickly transmit to humans and pets – Yuk!

Winter Objectives: Ants are active all year round, but cold weather conditions certainly makes the warm indoors sound very appealing. And since they are looking for suitable new accommodation, your house sounds like the perfect winter vacation.
Disruption: Wherever there is one ant, there are hundreds more. Therefore, if you have found the odd ant or two scurrying around the home, it can indicate that you have an entire colony residing with you. Uh-oh.
Pest: Termites
Winter Objectives: Termites love to feed off timbers and wooden structures, which is why they are commonly found in the walls of untreated homes. During the cooler season they are particularly drawn to your home if there are high levels of moisture such as leaking showers, dripping air conditioning overflows and pipe or tap leakages.
Disruption: Termites may be small, but never underestimate the destruction they can bring to the structure of your home. They are the most costly type of pest in Australia and can lead to thousands and thousands of dollars worth of damage repair. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
