If you find a termite nest in your home, it’s important not to disturb it until you have contacted a licensed inspector. If you disturb it, the termites might move to another spot where you may not be able to find them again.

Reducing the Risks of Termites

  1. Make sure there aren’t any leaks in your pipes and your drainage is in good condition
  2. Make sure your outdoor plants are far from the edge of your house and don’t cover any weep holes
  3. Don’t store items that block any ventilation space under your house
  4. If you’re just building a new home, talk to your contractor for certain construction methods and materials that help in preventing termite infections
  5. Get regular home inspections from a professional

Different Types of Termite Management

Physical barriers won’t kill termites but they can prevent them from entering your home. They are non-toxic and permanent without requiring much maintenance. Annual inspections are still recommended.

  1. Termite shields or ant caps make it easier to detect termite activity
  2. Install woven stainless steel mesh around pipe openings so termites can’t get through

Chemical barriers require maintenance and renewal but will kill termites in your home and the ones trying to get in.

  1. Permethrin or bifenthrin are repellent chemicals. Termites will attempt to find a breach.
  2. Fipronil and imidacloprid are non-repellent insecticides, making them effective in contaminating termites that pass through it, as well as the colony they’re returning to.

A less toxic alternative but requires regular maintenance would be setting up monitoring and bait stations. They use small amounts of low-toxic products that kill termites without affecting other animals and humans.

  1. Several bait stations are placed in the ground outside the house
  2. Check the stations regularly, replenish the bait when needed
  3. The termites are affected by the bait and infect the rest of the colony

Of these three types of termite management systems, monitoring and bait stations need regular inspections including the house as there is no guarantee that termites will actually find the bait.
