10 Things You Didn’t Know About Rats

Everybody knows rats and mice are vermin. They are dirty and can carry diseases. They are intruders in the home and should not be tolerated. 

Here are 10 other things you may not know about these pesky creatures.

1. Rats’ teeth never stop growing. Their front teeth can grow up to five inches every year. They stay short and stubby by continuously gnawing on anything, including your lead or pvc pipes, wood, electric wiring and any plastic materials.
2. As mentioned before, rats spread diseases. But aside from the well-known leptospirosis infection, rats can also give salmonella poisoning when they get into your food, murine typhus fever, and rat bite fever.
3. These diseases can be transferred through droppings, urine, saliva, bites, exposed food or cutlery, or through ticks and fleas that have fed on a rat.
4. Rats can squeeze through openings as small as the circumference of a pencil.
5. Rats can climb walls, pipework, trees, vines, telephone wires. They are also accomplished swimmers and can navigate plumbing.
6. Rats find places to nest in your roof or in your walls during the cooler months.
7. There is always an Alpha rat and he eats first. It therefore is important to have more than one baiting spot.
8. Rats are nocturnal but have poor eyesight. They navigate using their whiskers as guidance and travel along vertical surfaces.
9. Rats can start reproducing as early as 3-4 months of age and can have up to 6 litters per year.
10. Rats live in groups. If you see one, there will be more.
